In The Studio
my gear
I have a tendancy to be very "idiosyncratic" in the studio. I have
very strong ideas about recording. I have been fortunate enough to
work in some very nice rooms. The first real "studio" I worked in was
Eddie Boucher's room "EAB Studios" in Lewiston, Maine. It was a great room, API Console, MCI
16 Track and a bunch of great out-board gear. Eddie took me to a studio in
Boston one time to mix. It was a great room...called "Soundtracks" or "Soundtrax"
or something. They had a great big console...Neve or SSL...and they had
a New England Digital "Synclavier". Wow. I was impressed. Over $500,000.00 in
one room. After that I worked at SugarHill in Houston, Digital Services in Houston
(over a million dollars in that room) and worked with Mark Hallman at Congress
House Studios in Austin. These rooms were all amazing.
Today, I have as much or more power than most of those studios. I only have about
$3000 worth of gear INCLUDING my instruments. People throw lots of money at recording,
but its my belief that its not so much your gear, but how well you know your
gear that makes the difference. I get my gear on Ebay or second hand very cheaply. All
of the guitars have unique stories. Click the links to read the stories.
Here's a list of my studio gear:
Thats it! So far I have recorded "Texas Sky", "Curse Of The Fool", "The Point", "Immortal",
"Mae Pyle" and "All Over The World" with only what you see listed above.
I record in a small room that is my office. I have lots of kids, so getting time to
record is difficult. I work late at night alot. It's great having a workable studio
in my house because I can work as slow or fast as I like. It's my sound!
